Charleston, Utah was founded in 1859 by Mormon pioneers, with George Noakes and William Manning building the first homes near Noakes Springs. The town was settled as part of a movement to establish communities for ranching and farming in the Provo Valley, and was officially incorporated in 1899. The origin of the town’s name is debated, with one account attributing it to Charles Shelton, a surveyor, and another to William Winterton, an early resident, who suggested the name after hearing of Charleston, South Carolina.
